Madagascar’s southern regions continue to endure the effects of a prolonged drought, aggravated by the effects of El Niño.
Despite operational challenges, WFP continued its drought emergency response to meet the needs of disaster-affected communities through food and cashbased unconditional assistance and nutrition support.
Funding requirements for the drought emergency response from March to end of June 2017 stands at USD 6,9 million.
Operational Updates
WFP Response to the Drought in the South: In February, WFP assisted 337,285 people through a combination of unconditional food and cash-based assistance. The assisted population were from the seven most severely affected districts.
Nutrition Assistance: Given the deteriorated nutritional status of affected populations, nutrition support (treatment and prevention of moderate acute malnutrition - MAM) was provided to 26,257 children under five years of age and pregnant and breastfeeding women as part of the MAM treatment component and 20,850 children under 2 years of age for the under the preventive component.
School Meals: In February, 195,000 children from 1,066 schools received school meals.
Accountability to People Assisted: WFP Madagascar is in the process of establishing a beneficiary feedback hotline as well as a third-party complaint mechanism.
